This episode of podmissum features Performing Arts Department Chair Jim Cifelli. Mr. Cifelli was born in Yorktown Heights, New York. A seasoned post-bop/hard bop trumpet player, his musical career spans decades. His musical education formally began in music camp during the summer of fourth grade when he was given his first trumpet to play, though it was said his passion for the instrument was evident even as a toddler. Catching the music bug, he went on to study music at University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, and eventually enrolled at New York University where he received a degree in jazz and commercial music. He currently serves as the director of Performing Arts at Trinity, a position he’s held since 2012. This conversation with Mr. Cifelli took place at Trinity in the autumn of 2015.

This episode of podmissum features Judy Glantzman ’74 who lives and works in New York City. She has exhibited her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. A 1978 graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Judy was active in the East Village art scene in the 1980s. After receiving a number of grant and awards, including the Anonymous Was a Woman Foundation Grant in 1997 and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 2001, Judy held a thirty-year retrospective of her work in 2009 with Dactyl Foundation. For Judy the artistic process reveals as well as obfuscates—she has defined art as a dialogue that goes back and forth, a “paradoxical dynamic” like ying and yang—a spiritual principle that she enjoys lending to her work.

The podcast took place at Judy's most recent show in October 2015, at Betty Cuningham Gallery on Manhattan's Lower East Side. In the course of the conversation three of the works in her show are discussed. The first is rather large with sixteen separate framed and mounted works of acrylic and paper hung next to each other to create a group of separated panels. Each panel is approximately one foot square and may have a representational image, such as a depiction of the earth, or may be nearly abstract with few recognizable images. The other works that are discussed are groups of small portraits. Some of the portraits are Judy’s interpretations of works by other artists, such as Winslow Homer, while other portraits depict the actor Peter Falk, perhaps best known for his role as television’s Columbo.

This episode of podmissum features Laura Glesby ’17. Born and raised in New York City, Laura provides insight into the creative process from the perspective of a young writer. An avid reader from an early age, Laura discovered she could read in preschool, an accomplishment that separated her from most of her peers at the time. This discovery transformed her budding educational experience and shaped an identity strongly informed by books, and eventually, by writing. Wishing to take on a more structured approach to the craft, Laura enrolled in classes in the non-profit organization Writopia Lab, considered to be one of the premier programs in New York City for writers between the ages of six and eighteen. It is at Writopia that she continues to hone her writing skills and develop her creative process under the tutelage of published authors and a community of young writers. The conversation with Laura took place at Trinity in the autumn of 2015.

This episode of podmissum features Mr. J. Tom Morgan. Mr. Morgan was the first prosecutor in Georgia to specialize in the prosecution of crimes against children and teenagers. Prior to his current career, Mr. Morgan was the district attorney of DeKalb County, Georgia. In addition to his legal work, Mr. Morgan is a recognized authority on the protection and education of young people. He is in wide demand as a public speaker for schools, churches, and community groups. He has appeared on many television programs, including CNN’s Talk Back Live, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and the Today Show.

Mr. Morgan has published a book, Ignorance is No Defense: A Teenager’s Guide to Georgia Law. The book is an approachable explanation of the law, using real-world examples to illustrate its points.

Mr. Morgan was invited to speak to the parents at Trinity School on 9 December 2014. He is introduced by Assistant Head of School and Upper School Principal Jessica Bagby.

This episode of podmissum features Dr. Mark Crawford. Dr. Crawford is a partner in an outpatient practice in Atlanta, Georgia and is a consulting psychologist to The Westminster Schools and Pace Academy. He is also team psychologist for the Atlanta Hawks basketball team.

Dr. Crawford has published many works on the psychological challenges facing adolescents, with topics including substance abuse, parent-child conflict, and the diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. This episode of podmissum features Dean of Harvard Divinity School David Hempton. Named the outstanding teacher of the year in 2008, he was recently granted a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities and has given the F.D. Maurice Lecture at King’s College London and the Cadbury Lecture at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Prior to his appointment at Harvard in the spring of 2007, Hempton was a professor of christianity at Boston University and director of the School of History at Queen’s University Belfast. At Harvard’s Divinity School, he has encouraged more discourse with the Arts and Sciences faculty leading to a broader intellectual dialogue on religion.

Hempton studies evangelicalism on a global scale, with a focus on the early modern period. He has written numerous books and articles; his latest titles include Methodism: Empire of the Spirit (Yale, 2005), Evangelical Disenchantment (Yale, 2008), and The Church in the Long Eighteenth Century (Tauris, 2011). He is currently working on a study of the secularization of Europe and America from the eighteenth-century to the present day.

Dean Hempton was invited to speak at Trinity on the morning of 11 September 2014 at the opening Upper School Chapel of the 2014-2015 academic year. He is introduced by Calista Lee ’11 and after his talk there is a brief question and answer period with Upper School students.

Aaron Smithson ’15 is the New York State winner of the United States Institute of Peace National Peace Essay Contest for 2014. A rising senior at Trinity, Aaron has been interested in international relations for as long as he can remember. He discovered the contest by searching online, looking for something additional to do his junior year at Trinity. He decided that it would be interesting, and challenging, to write about security sector reform in Somalia and Sierra Leone.

Aaron’s research into the topic, as well as his work on his winning essay, gave him fascinating insights into security sector reform in developing nations. His interview is thoughtful, insightful, compelling, and riveting. Listen in, you’ll be amazed.
